When Sweet Used to Mean Sugar

I remember when sweet used to mean sugar.  When I used to suck on those little white squares to my heart’s content as I waited for my mom at the bank.  I much preferred them to the little pink, yellow and blue packets that studies show cause cancer in lab rats. (But I’m sure those packets are safe; the FDA always has our best interest in mind, right?)  Yep. Sugar beat those little pastel cancer packets hands down.

But now, thanks to California and our ‘healthy eating’,  I just spent a good thirty minutes at the Co-op Supermarket figuring out the best sweetener to put in my  Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats (made with brown rice krispies and ‘organic’ marshmallows of course.)   Agave, stevia, brown rice syrup, evaporated cane juice, etc.  Why so many choices, healthy people?  Haven’t you heard too many options only makes the decision process that much more daunting?    What the sh*t Santa Monica, as my teacher mom who doesn’t know how to cuss properly would say.  I mean seriously.  What the sh*t.
